To all of my classes for the school year 2010-2011:
Incoming Honors Freshman: Welcome. Ninth grade is a big transition. I look forward to guiding you through the process of reading, analyzing literature, and genre writing. This year you will read Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, among others.
Honors 3: British/World Literature includes some of the most fabulous canons of literature in the world: Beowulf, Canterbury Tales, Macbeth, metaphysical poetry and Shakespearean sonnets. Reading this literature and looking closely at purpose, audience and role, coupled with voice and point of view, is excellent practice for senior year English and beyond.
College 4: Your goal is threefold: to read all essential canonical literature in preparation for college, to write effectively in preparation for college writing, and to learn to analyze literature beyond the literal word. No more vocabulary or paraphrasing. Senior year includes works by Sophocles, Shakespeare, Dante, Salinger, Wiesel and more. Global awareness is the key to making the transition from high school learning to college.
